Whats the difference between two lenses with those letters?  Difference between D and G?

The "G" version is newer (and supposedly better) but it lacks an aperture ring, meaning it has to be used by cameras that can control the aperture. Here is a link to a comparison of these lenses...

Yep one has an aperture ring, and the other does not. All you do with the D lens is set the lens to whatever its smallest aperture, so f/ 22, and so on for it to work properly. Also if you get an fEE error with one mounted you check the aperture ring first.

One point not mentioned yet is that the "G" version only stops down to F16 as opposed to the F22 of every other 50mm Nikkor lens. That said, diffraction takes it's toll past F11 anyway.

I shoot some "D" and "G" lenses and see no difference in image quality.

Why so serious?
