I don't suppose anyone has clear answer on this?

Depends on what you mean by best?
Image quality - Sony A7RII
JPG/Black & White/skin tones - Fuji XT-2. XT-20, Xpro2, X100F
Portability - Several Olympus & Panasonic. E-M1-II probably having best image quality
Video- Sony and Panasonic
Lens Selection - Olympus and Panasonic
Adaptability - Sony A6500 and A7RII for Canon mount lenses

I chose Olympus due to size, weight and image quality good enough to easily print 20x30 inches.

What's important to you?

Asking what is the "best" is very subjective as different people have different opinions. What I may like, feature wise, another person may not. You need to examine the feature sets of different cameras & decide which one best suits your needs & desires. Remember the old adage, "One person's trash is another's treasure"

What's important to you?

Nailed it.  Except for Adaptability I would add Canon EOS M system.

Maybe later but I don't think the "M" system is good enough yet. I do expect the next release to be much better. Nikon is asleep at the wheel and getting left behind.
