What is the catch on the Nikon 70-300mm or the 55-300mm

I'm messing around on Amazon and the 70-300mm popped up and then the 55-300mm, both of these lenses are pretty low on the price scale, are these just not good lenses? What is the down fall with these? This would be going on a D7000 that I'm buying (first camera). I do have a $1500 budget left over for lenses, so would like to stretch that, but don't want to compromise the quality to bad. Does that sound right?

Honest opinion on these lenses would be appreciated. Thank you!

There are several versions of the 70-300, the latest one is a good lens, albeit a bit slow on the long end (as is the other lens you mentioned & most of the other consumer grade lenses)...Consumer grade lenses will still give good images, they just won't be as robust in build quality or as fast as Pro versions...For a beginner, either one would be a good starting point (I'm not familiar with the 55-300 to really give you advice on the lens though)...

Thank you Scott, would you have any thoughts as to how the 70-300mm and the 18-200 compare? Granted you get more zoom from the 70-300mm, but I was told the 18-200mm is a very good lens?

Some people love the 18-200 lens, others not so much..It's a good range for a lens to be considered as a all purpose walk around lens where you wouldn't have to change it out often..I'm one who shoots with a lot of older MF lenses thus I don't mind switching out like some others do...As for you getting one, go to a camera store (with your camera) & ask if you can try it out. Or maybe rent it (a better idea as then you can use it in situations like you normally would)

If I were in your place, had $1500.00 to spend, I would probably pass on the 18-200, and pick up a used 18-70, an older but fine lens, and add the 70-300 VR.....;)

(all for well under a grand)

Why so serious?

Exactly! And VR is the point here, the 70-300 non VR is a poor performing lens. The 18-200 does suffer from vignetting on the long end. The 70-300VR is not all that large of a lens either so it would be a good walk around.
