Nikon D850 filmmaker kit lens choices

5 years 4 months ago #617570 by Joan Barnes
I was just taking notice to the lens choices that Nikon bundles in their D850 filmmaker kit.  These are all f/1.8.  For example the 85mm comes in f/1.4.  So is that added speed just not important or was this a price motivated package?

I have a D850 on it's way and now wondering if the f/1.8 are better for camera than alternative lenses with the f/1.4.
  • AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED lens
  • AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G lens
  • AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED lens

I can't think of a reason you would need a razor thin focal plane (depth of field) for a film. And as soon as you stop both the f/1.4 and f/1.8 down to f/4 (e.g.) they're equivalent. The f/1.8 holds it's own for IQ; the f/1.4 only has added value for wide open portraits.  You might decide on a 50 f/1.8 but again, the f/1.4 adds nothing for film.

That lens complement makes the most sense for film in general. Other lenses would be for special shots.

Correct. I have a newer 20 f/1.8, a friend has the 1.4 and frankly I can't see any advantage to the slightly faster glass. (pixel peeped too). The cost savings on the former made mine an easy choice....

Why so serious?

Thanks for the confirmation.

Since I do portraits, I just sold my f/1.8G and am searching for a f/1.4D now. The bokeh is certainly different and I like a shallow DoF. But the G offers nothing of the D, so I can save a lot of money.
