Would you consider the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 over the 1.4?

My apologies. Sometimes I got the “recent posts” search and forget to check if a thread is in a specific forum.

No worries, of course. That was intended more for clarification, to keep someone from trying to find a Nikon 105mm f/1.8 lens.

Have you seen the video of the guy using a 500mm lens to shoot portraits?

I had this bad guy for years…

105mm ƒ1,8

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Words matter.

I stated "make" not made. Yes, Nikon made a 105mm f/1.8 Ai-S lens. Now, they don't, at least according nikonusa.com (which I checked before I posted). That lens can be easily had via eBay or Amazon if the camera body supports it. But that doesn't make my post incorrect.

Mine did not proposed it was but just added a complement.

Isn't the 85mm f/1.8 have touchy autofocus?

AF is a product of the lens and the body, as well as light. There's no single answer, but my experience is that both the 85mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.4D on the D750 are touchy. On a D4s the f/1.4D seems to focus quite quickly.

The f/1.4G may improve on things.

Them: compression and shallow DoF are flattering in portraiture.

Me: attaches 800mm f/1.8 for self portraits and prays...

The Aussie that shoots Nikon was comparing the 400mm 2.8 and  500mm 5.6 from Sony and Nikon and did some portrait to test a few other features and they looked pretty nice. Stupid far working distance though.

I often shoot portraits with very long lenses and I love the results.

In such case, an assistant, close to the subject with flash & co also
has a new generation 2-way radio communication device so I can
talk with her/him.
