Did Nikon just drop the ball with the D6?

Word is spreading fast, and these specs on the D6 are really disappointing for many.  What I don't understand is why would Nikon come to market with this?

Its not a decision made on monday and released on tuesday, engineering, factory set up, training and manufacturing, marketing,  distribution and all required to get a camera in the hands of a consumer,  I don't think they "dropped" the ball, but its clear the future is in mirrorless cameras ..In my case, the price tag is way out of my reach, in fact I wouldn't trade my eight year old D800 for a new D6 straight up, though event photographers will find the D6 a great tool.
We've seen "ho hum" releases before.

Why so serious?

A great tool for sure! A flagship camera is not marketed
for the common mortal man… think of the targeted ones.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

But doesn't it have left over parts from the D5?  Being a flagship camera, you would expect leading technology.  Not a mashup of left overs.

You mean leftovers like lens mounts, and casings, and batteries, and diodes/capacitors/memory card slots/wires/etc?

New camera designs are generally evolutionary. That the D6 didn't evolve enough for some is a purely subjective assessment.

And frankly, if you're not in the market for one, who cares, really? Unless there's a feature you care about, what possible difference does it make what the D6 provides?

To the detractors, what did YOU want in the D6 that Nikon "forgot"? Also, would you have bought it if it had ticked all the feature boxes?
The D5 was amazing, tough to improve sometimes....after all the complaints of slow Nikon, they obviously moved too fast here?

Why so serious?

I think some might be getting confused because Nikon used a D5 in D6 promotional videos.
