How much is this lens worth used? I found one for $400 on Craigslist. Good deal or no? :)

Any idea why this 180mm 2.8 lens is less expensive as a 105mm f2.8?

I'm just trying to figure out if this is a worth while piece of glass to get? What do you think?

It depends what you are expecting to do with it. The 105 is a micro, right? The 180 is a telephoto. Also, if you want the close up lens, look at the 105 2.8 VR, it is a VERY fine macro....

A quick search shows it usually goes for almost 1000 dollars new. You're getting a really good deal then if the lens on craigslist is in good shape. Nikon's made a lot of different versions of the 180mm f2.8 over the years, I'd make sure this is the IF ED AF one.

The reason it's a bit cheaper than a Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 (not the Micro-Nikkor 105mm VR which is a different lens altogether), the 200mm f/2 and the 135mm f/2 is that it's an 'easier' lens to manufacture very well...
But all those fast-primes are top quality optics.

It'll be perfect for tightly-cropped portraits in low-ish light - as are the 85, 105, 135 and 200mm lenses...

For that money i'd give it a punt and if it's a dog, sell it on.

I just posted a thread about the 180mm f/2.8, did you end up buying this lens? You happy with it?
