need lens recommendation

I've recently purchased a Nikon D3000 DSLR Kit. I'm really pleased with it apart from the fact that my old Sigma 28-300 lens won't work automatically on it (shame on you Nikon!!!). It worked fine on my D70. So, I'm looking for another similar lens and the latest Tamron 28-300 has been recommended. I enjoy wildlife photography and have the Bigma which is great but it's too heavy to take on trips. Can anyone recommend the Tamron or a similar alternative? My budget is fairly limited.

i don't have it, but take a look at the Nikon 70-300 VR version. Supposed to have great IQ, and it's light enough to tote around. Maybe someone that has one can chime in on this lens . . .

Another alternative would be a good used lens. You can get a Nikon 70-300 f/4-5.6 G from keh.com for $149 is excellent condition, as an example.

KEH is a good steer. I've purchased several used items from them and have been very pleased.

You just need to make sure that you get a lens with a built-in-motor (BIM) if you want to auto-focus on the D3000. I have a D40, and am considering a Tamron 18-270mm to replace my current 55-200mm Nikon because of the longer reach. That lens has a BIM version. But it's not cheap (about $500 with shipping).

A number of non-BIM lenses will work on the D3000 if they are Nikon AF compatible (just make sure you research carefully), but you have to focus manually. Not an issue for me, but can be for some.

Good luck!
