The D3100 is not even close to being as good as the D300s and isn't competing with it.
The D7000 on the other hand will have this effect I'm sure.
BTW be VERY careful with Ken Rockwell's site. A LOT of his advice is TERRIBLE (he has some good information, but a lot is STUPID).

AF-S — Autofocus-Silent. Uses a "Silent Wave Motor" (ultrasonic motor) to focus quietly and quickly. Similar to Canon's "USM" technology. Introduced in 1996.
