Which Nikon lens to buy: 17-55mm f/2.8 vs 24-70mm f/2.8, need some help please.

I need a good f/2.8 street lens for every day shooting and I've narrowed it down between these two lenses. I need some fast, sharp and doesn't weigh a ton.

I have a 70-200mm right now so love this lens, and almost thinking the 24-70mm will be the best fit as it completes my focal range.

So feel free to post your thoughts or opinions on either one of these lenses.

17-55 is a DX, 24-70 FX.
24-70 is an awesome lens, and would be my pick. However, it is a pretty heavy piece of glass. For which body, may I ask?......B)

Why so serious?

24-70mm is a awesome lens, but as pointed out already is a heavy one.

Yeah, pretty much my thoughts, you guys just took the doubt out of my mind. I shoot with a D300.

If you don't plan on going FX some day, that 17-55 is still a stellar lens. The 24-70 will actually be a little long on a DX camera. (Its still heavy)......B)

24-70mm is my favorite lens. It's on my camera most of the time.

No doubt the nikon 24-70 is a rockin' lens. But 24mm on a crop is pretty long IMHO.

Don't forget the old 17-35mm f/2.8 - i still use mine in a tight corner when the 24-70 is a bit long...
