105mm f/4 vs 105mm f/2.8

I've been shopping around the used market for a few weeks for a good priced 105mm so I can do some macro photography. I just came across a manual focus 105mm f/4 for a hard to say no price. Other than there is a full stop difference in aperture and no auto focus, what difference would this older lens have compared to the newer 105mm f/2.8?

Possibly metering will be a problem

Since you shoot with a D70, the older manual focus lenses will not meter with your camera . That said, I have a D70s (also no metering) & it doesn't pose much of a problem & I use an extensive collection of MF lenses including 4 macro lenses, , I use "Sunny 16" to get in the ballpark & then the LCD & histogram to fine tune my exposure. I also shoot in Raw. You will be more than satisfies with the IQ that the older F4 version will give you & save a lot of $$$ in the process...(which can be used for other goodies). As for the difference between F4 & F2.8, you likely won't be shooting wide open as much as you think. I rarely do, mainly for an "artistic" effect...

Another difference is the magnification ratio. The f/2.8 gives you 1-1 without tubes. I have both lenses, and they are equally sharp( read: awesome)
