is slow writing speed usual

I bought a used Olympus E-1 and also a 4GB memory card for it. I am wondering if I am using the wrong setting because it takes about 10 seconds to write to the memory card. I couldn't find anything in the manual about this either. Can someone please help?

Memory cards are now rated with a speed number. A class 10 card is faster than a class 4 for example. I learned this when converting to the SDHS card from the XD cards used in Olympus. The XD cards do have a high speed version that is allegedly faster though I never noticed the difference.

Question: Are you shooting in RAW format? That type of file seems to be about four times larger than jpeg compressed files. Shooting in burst mode (multiple photos) will cause a long write time as well. I imagine bracketing your shot will cause a similar delay.

If I'm not mistaken, the E-1 is an older digital model, so don't expect blazing fast write times. Still, 10 secs is pretty long. A little too long I'd say, even for RAW files. What speed is your card?
