My younglings

Can you please offer your critique on this photo, specifically in skin tones, and over-all exposure? these are my sons on their first day of school. I did some editing, such as contrast and sharpness. This was taken using a speedlite 430 with overcast sky.
Thank you!

Just wondering, did you diffuse your flash at all? It doesn't look as harsh as I'd expect from a speedlight alone.

I did use my flash difuser on this shot. I don't know if this is the correct way (or better put, the best way)to do this, but when I use the flash I change over from Av to Tv, usually at 200 or so.
Thank you!

Your flash sync speed is probably either 200 or 250, so that works pretty well. For fill flash on outdoor portraits, I don't usually use Tv...but then again I don't use it much anyway!

I usually shoot in manual, expose for the background, and fill in the subject with the flash. Usually I use a diffuser of some sort, unless it's an impromptu/unplanned shot and I just happen to have the flash by itself.

Sometimes I also use Av for this, expose for the background, and adjust the ISO and aperture to get the shutter speed to match the flash sync speed. The advantage doing it this way is that Canon DSLRs automatically bring up the flash exposure compensation control on the display when shooting in Av, so you can quickly adjust and shoot away.

Maybe next time use aperture priority set the aperture to its widest setting and you should lose most of that background, it looks a little cluttered back there, so iether move to a better spot or maybe bring the boys much further forward, the diffuser has worked kindly for you and the pose is fine but it does look as though you have asked the elder one to smile as it is forced, best to just chat, tell them a poor dad joke or worse still do a dad dance right before shooting, trust me it works.

Awesome! thank you for the feedback. photobud, you hit the nail smack dab on the head. My eldest has a "pose smile" that he kindly shows when I ask him to. It's like a light switch. Unfortunately for me, it's not natural. lol
My youngest also has the same smile but it's at least an enthusiastic smile.

I know plently of bad dad jokes. I'll give them a try. Also noted is the background.

Thanks again.

Hi John,
it´s great photo, well done
:agree: with what is said here before. The only thing I´d like to mention is that I tried taking outdoor-portraits using the speedlight 580exII together with a diffusor (white plastic cup) on it.
I´ll soon kicked it off the flashlight as it swallows a lot of light you need to brighten up the object.
For indoor-use I don´t want to miss is but outdoor it´s better without it.
When I am doing portraits I mainly use AV-Programm in combination with the aperture wide open.
Great job, John :)
