HDR & Mono

This is one of my favourite shots at the moment it's from a 1940's re-enactment event on a steam railway, I came across this guy dressed as an Austrian Mountain Trooper on the train and he just had a face so full of character and an amazing stare that I had to grab this shot. I did 3 exposures and processed them using Photomatix HDR software to add depth to the lines in his face and then did the mono conversion using Silver Efex Pro 2. Do you think it works ? I love it but I would welcome your thoughts.

I would critique - brilliant shot, the HDR is wonderfully done and the conversion to mono is outstanding.

As it's a forum and no one in the real world will see it, how about posting the original shot as a comparison, I bet the transformation will equally impress those that know what's gone into making this shot work.

Okay, I can't help it it, I will critique - if the background was ever so slightly darker, it would make you subject stabnd out a litle better. Maybe a light burn around his face

Thanks for all your comments, Towcestermark I did try this with a slightly darker background but I felt that this one had more depth and you can actually see it's shot in a train corridor. And at Towecestermarks' request here is the original file taken straight from the RAW file with no editing (just resizing to allow upload) at all so you can compare the two. Original was shot on an Olympus E-510 with the Zuiko 14-42mm kit zoom and illuminated with a single Olympus FL50 flash bounced off the roof of the carriage.

You were right to HDR the shot, it's given it a great style and shown off the chaps rugged, craggy face. Excellent work

I really like it, but the subject needs to be brighter so he will stand out from the background. I wouldn't darken the background, but I would definitely lighten up the subject.

you bought out the finest details and lines..background looks good, gives it a glossy effect to it as well..character is shown, ...i highly suggest bringing out the subject from the background ,make the subject pop out by lightening it...
