Are these going to be posed shots? If so, then. Pick an area free of distractions, and set up any off camera lights. Make sure the background is clear. If a large group remind everyone that if they can't see the camera then the camera can't see them. Is this your family? If not have a list of required shots. When I shoot a group of 30+ than I use a step ladder. Good. Luck...

Just so I clearly understand, you stand on the step ladder? Do you use trial pod? Hoping to do shots outdoors but if weather is bad maybe in a pic Nicole shelter. Actually think will be casual

I did one late last year with around 20 family members. It was overcast but that turned out to be helpful for me. The clouds acted as one big softbox, which meant I didn't need to worry too much about lighting. If you've never done it, consider the cloudy weather a gift. Something else I learned was I should've sent out an email to let everyone know to dress in a similar color. As it turned out there were lots of light and lots of darks. My camera's range is not the greatest so that created some challenges in the post processing. It really helps to google outdoor family portraits (or indoor depending on your plans) to get some ideas ahead of time. If they have charged you with taking the photos, you should run the show and be clear about what you want them to do. Most of all have fun with it!

The last wedding I did, I took a picture outside on a large lawn, I got everyone to stand in a V shape with the point of the V towards the camera. I than climbed the ladder ( about 8 to 10 feet ) than got everyone to wave... In this case the bride and groom were at the point, with a large family perhaps grand parents.... It turned out very nice...
