Joe McNally made it look easy...

I wanted this photo bad. Originally we started with the honeycombed flash on a stand, and my subject held it himself. But with the tide he just couldn't get it pointed at himself. So we ended up with the flash in my left hand, the camera in my right, and my arms are shaking because I lifted a ton of weights at the gym earlier today. So part of the time I'm just pointing the flash and camera madly trying to get it right. After dealing with the movement, the mouthfuls of seawater, and jumping into the air every time a wave broke shouting, "Oh God my camera!" I finally got it on the last frame. Or at least as close as I was going to get.

I watched Joe work at CES2012 in the Nikon booth. He does make it look easy. An assistant is helpful at times...

Really like the BTW.

Looking at the finished product, I'd say it was well worth fighting the tides and overworked muscles. Great shot!

WELL DONE .. IT looks great BTW
About McNally, It's just comes with experiance.. I have attended a workshop with him last March called (Lighting Bootcamp with Joe McNally) in GPP 2012 and it was just amazing.. True that his assistants help with almost everything but he is the one who visualize everything in his mind and direct everyone and everything is place.. I think it's a matter of experiance and lot's of practice only.. and of course, Talent.

You could have sat on the beach and used a tele right? He didn't need to be neck deep in water either, just in the shallows and squat down...

Great shot though. :D

Ninja made a good point about being knee deep in water. I have to say, this is a pretty killer shot. Please share some of your flash settings.

Wouldn't have worked as well I don't think, a telephoto would have really compressed him and the background together. The sunset also wasn't directly above the water, so we had to shoot more sideways rather than facing the ocean or the land completely. I also wouldn't have been able to use the flash because he couldn't hold it and light himself and a stand would have washed away. We tried being in more shallow water but that is the point at where the waves were breaking and causing a lot of spray and mist.

Flash settings: I am using a Speedlight 580 EXII which is gelled with a full CTO filter, and then a honeycomb modifier on it. It's at f/4.5, 1/200th, and the flash is somewhere around 1/64, really low power because it's so close. There is also an 8x ND filter on my lens which is 3 stops of ND.
