Much better than my dabbling.  Of course that has never stopped me from kibitzing.  Stronger fill light would be nice.

I' might try a light but only to get the catch light in the kids eye's. If you didn't do that and it was my kid, I'd love it anyway and never notice it! Very nice photo!

I like the composition and the moment. The colors are nice.

The backlighting is quite strong and causes the face to appear darker than it should. Thus the suggestion of fill light.

As for "waiting for a smile", don't. Read this:  www.picturecorrect.com/tips/top-10-children-photography-tips/ for some good suggestions.

I agree completely with the other comments. Great shot, and needs just a little fill light. Not much, because you don't want to lose the effect of the backlight through the hat.
