Harsh light shooting

I spend a lot of time shooting in harsh lighting. Half of my time in photography is shooting around farms during the day while my daughter has riding lessons. Many times an outdoor arena is involved with no shade. Backgrounds get really tricky too, because sometimes the areas contain some clutter from obstacles, cones, the neighboring farm and the clutter on their property.

That being said, Ive been playing a lot with harsh lighting and its been an interesting challenge. Because I dont do it as consistently as macro, I am learning a bit slower.

Here are a few shots I managed to capture. The Dynamic ranges look decent, as nothing is clipping, but keeping the light off of faces is also a challenge. Are these photos “good”? As in, does it look like I have good control over the lighting here, or is there something I can adjust to tweak them?

This pony was most likely abused, so they have been trying to recondition the her to trust people and be more calm. It’s still young, so she will most likely recover and be fine after some months of work.

Thanks! I have a full set of these. I am just unsure of exposures and crops at times. I try to expose to the rider’s face, but that can be difficult with these contrasting horses and the sand/dirt.  Texas dirt is very sandy. indoor Arena soil is so much nicer to shoot with.

Im not happy with the barn I’m the background of this one, but it’s a nice moment captured.
