Determining distance from you to subject in camera?

12 years 7 months ago #149847 by The Gardener
This has happened a number of times where I took and shot and wanted to the know the approximate distance from me to the object that I shot. Is there a way in the camera to see this information?

Doesn't need to be fancy, just "20 feet" or "6 meters" as example. Something that is easy for me to read.

Is this information available in my camera?

Some lenses have a distance scale. Get the subject in focus then read it off the lens.

You can also do it in reverse. Set the distance and they will be in focus.

I find modern lens focusing scales to be almost worthless. They are just too small. I'm either at 3', 10' or infinity.

I used CHDK in my old Canon Powershot. It's software that is installed instead of the manufacturer's software. It included a focusing distance read out and DOF scale. I found it to be a wonderful tool, and wish my fancy smancy DSLRs had it. It seems like it would just be a few lines in the software. Maybe someday...

That should be in the EXIF data

I have this same problem. Like when I am shooting a bird in a tree, I want to know how many feet I am from the tree. I'm not good a knowing, just by seeing if something is 50yards or 20 ft.

Maybe it depends on the camera? None of my Canon DSLRs (20D, 40D, 5D, 5DII) seem to record it in the EXIF data.
