Faking ulta wide lens?

Is it possible to fake an ultra wide angle lens and have it look realistic compared to the real thing?

I know my landscape work would benefit from a wider lens than the kit 18-55mm, but the lens I will most likely end up buying is not cheap and it may be a while before I can justify the expense.

You could do what I imagine most people do... take multiple shots of an area and stitch those images together to make a panoramic. If done right, most people can't tell if it was stitch together or shot as a single image.

Gimp should be able too. I never used gimp, so I'm not sure. Hopefully someone here uses gimp and can help you out.
