Whats your opinion of vignetting in post?

In Lightroom I'm constantly tempted with the the vignetting tool down on the left side when in development mode. What do you think of photos with vignetting, better yet do you use vignetting on certain types of photos and some not? Most of my shots, I will put at least a tad of vignetting, just to direct the eye to the center of photo.

It's all about what the image wants. Some are very good with burning in a (non-circular) vignette that is effective in directing the eye. I'm not, but I do often add -15 to -20 on many images. I usually don't want it to be obvious.

And I think you meant the other left. At least, on my setup, it's on the right-hand tools menu.

I almost always darken the edges of my images. It is a very effective tool. I don't use a set filter for it though. I burn in the edges with a brush. Ansel Adams always did the same with his images. It does help direct the eye to the subject and keep it from wandering out of the image.

You above have convinced me to try it on my nature shots. Previously, I've only used it for portraits of my grandkids.

I think there is a time and place for it. I do enjoy it on landscapes.

Landscapes, nature and wildlife shots it looks good, I think with portraits are a hit and miss for me.

Same here, but I really think seascapes look best with vignetting.

Um, other than putting a crop-sensor-sized lens onto a full-frame camera (e.g. a DX lens on an FX body) and shoot wide open, you don't. It's done in post, either in the darkroom or the computer.

You could also use a lens hood that's too long, or stack too many filters on a wide angle lens. But the effect in either case is going to be ugly. ;)

I was messing with creating vignetting a couple months ago and found that by creating it in Lightroom will give you a more even looking vignetting vs stacking a punch of filters (I used 3) that just didn't look as nice.
