Beware Photo Stealers!

That site states it is maintained by a nonprofit group who established the site to promote their ideas etc., it does not appear to be a news source. Press photographers used to be on staff with a newspaper, wire service, etc.; now many are working freelance not as employees. Either way, the site in question doesn't seem to appear to have any right to use your photo without permission; it might be different if your photo had been published and they linked to the original source with a photo credit.

How or where did they obtain your photo? I'd check the Terms & Conditions of places you posted it since using some sites means you've agreed to their terms - those could include that photos you post on the site could be sublicensed, etc. and not necessarily with your knowledge or permission.

ASMP and other pro photographers websites have info. about rights, usage, licensing, etc. but in this situation you might need to get a legal opinion.

Icepics has a good point, where did they pull your photo from and how are the terms and conditions there framed up?

Well, when looking into the fine print of the news sources that used my photos, I found the following:

CBC -You keep the copyright in your submission. You grant to CBC/Radio-Canada a royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive (unless otherwise indicated in specific terms), worldwide licence to publish, reproduce and distribute by any means of communication controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada, including social media. (So strictly CBC and CBC subsidiaries)

CTV - I communicated directly with an editor, and the photos were used under the agreement of full credit for me. The website guidelines follow a similar format to that of the CBC.

The Carillon - A small local news source (given rights for single use).

The Weather Network - Same as CBC / CTV.

An independent magazine - Sold photo for single use, non exclusive.

Though all seem fair in their agreements, I am going to think twice about submitting them to news sources in this way in the future.

Good luck. I'm not Canadian so I don't know how the laws work there, but you have my moral support. I hate seeing this happen to people.
