AP severs ties with photographer who altered work

I'm reading this article, I'm looking at these photos and can't piece this together.  The alternation that is identified looks harmless and almost improvement for photo.

"The Associated Press has severed ties with a freelance photographer who it says violated its ethical standards by altering a photo he took while covering the war in Syria in 2013."

Take a look, here is the full article: http://news.yahoo.com/ap-severs-ties-photographer-altered-221938001.html

There must be more to this story, doesn't seem like good reason to go separate ways for just that.

Good ol' AP, they can skew and lie in their written pap, but no photoshop for you.  Pitiful....

Why so serious?

Wait I'm confused too. If they are going to severe ties for an altered photo I'd think the alteration would be something that changed the story, right? This is confusing. This literally has no impact on the story they are trying convey at all. Ugh.

I read about this on DPreview a while ago. Basically it's about the integrity of photo journalism and how you're not supposed to alter the image in anyway... yet they add colour and other effects for "drama" all the time. Whatever yo.

I guess I can understand that removing an object would kind of change the atmosphere of an image, but I wouldn't think it'd be severe enough for this type of drastic action. Is removing a camera really that big of deal?

Seems like a silly reason for cutting a relationship, there wasn't anything negative done to the photo?

This article on AP's site addresses the situation and the reason - the fifth paragraph in particular.
http://www.ap.org/Content/AP-In-The-News/2014/AP-severs-ties-with-photographer-who-altered-work

I've only done sports at a local/minor league level and even I know this would not be acceptable. I would expect that would be included in a contract or waiver that's signed when you receive your credentials. If you're doing news or sports the expectation is that you'll photograph what is there and not remove people or objects that were in the scene. It's most likely they were probably adhering to terms of a contract and are upholding their professional journalistic standards for their staff.

I've seen video of a photographer who shoots major leagues saying that their editors wanted to see what they shoot straight from the camera, and one of a pressroom at a major sporting event where the photographers turned in their media cards directly from the camera. A reputable media source is probably going to follow similar procedures.

Hmmm still not sure what to believe.  If all is true, AP is one tough cookie to work for!

What?! Tough crowd to work for.  If that is the full story, screw that.

Well I know the reason they a going with zero tolerance. I do not remember which news service did it, but they turned a non-event photo, into an event photo. Since then they want no manipulation at all, except for your basic levels corrections. I know that if you allow even minor manipulation in such as this, then there are some people who will go a lot further to make a shot pop. I know his manipulation sounds trivial, but he knew before hand that it was not tolerated at all, so now he is paying for it.

Yeah I can understand the "zero tolerance" thing. It just seemed like such a minor change, but if it's in the contract they gotta do what they gotta do.

I really feel for the photographer who says that he regrets the alteration.  I hope that this does not harm his career, but I suspect that it will.  I admire a photographer that is willing to be in the trenches and put their life in danger so the rest of us can see the story.

Oh man, I hadn't even thought of that. I'm sure he'll find work again, but this will haunt him and he might not get as prestigious of a job as this. He's brave and has skills but made a bone headed mistake that he probably didn't even think was going to be that big of deal. I hope he finds work again.
