Hey everyone,

Can you suggest any other lens calibration tools other than Datacolors Spyder Lenscal?

A speed square with a printed out scale taped to it. The scales are online in printable versions. I have only played with the whole lens calibration because I find it to be a case of being far too anal. First your camera itself with the AA filter causes softness, or what is perceived to be focusing problems. Second proper lens calibration is a very entailed process to get it right. All of the axises must be precise in any optical testing for them to work correctly. But the down&dirty method I described will work just as well as any of the products offered in the market place.

Unless you drop your lens, is there any need for calibrating a lens?

Well even dropping them a majority of the time does not require a calibration. All AF lenses have a small degree of inaccuracy, and there is a defined acceptable error. If I remember right is +/- up to 3%, but sometimes ones outside of that margin get by. Also if you find every lens has the repeatable error then there are adjustment screws inside your body that fix it. I am not suggesting you try that though. Bodies with the adjustment in the menu essentially do this, but it actually makes what is called a focus offset for individual lenses that are off. Manual lenses do not suffer from this unless the optics are not seated right, then you cannot get a good focus at any point. But their front or back focusing problems are user error.
