What is least amount of megapixel in camera and still usable?

I'm looking at used cameras on Craigslist and noticing people selling some old cameras here!  I'm just curious, and this question is more for entertainment value than having a specific purpose.  What do YOU consider as being the least amount of megapixels in a camera to still be usable today?

Depends on what you're going to do with the images.

An 8 x 10 printed at 300 dpi is about 7MP.

An Internet jpeg at 1024 x 768 is <1 MP.

0. It's called "film".

(Wipes away tear) Anyhoo....

There's more to it than pixel count. There's the quality of the sensor, the size of the sensor, the optics.

You don't indicate what type of camera (nor budget), so I'll reflect based on the assumption you're thinking about a used DSLR.

Depending upon features you may be better off with a new, low-end model, if you're shopping for cameras that have a smaller pixel count. But until you clarify our goals, it's gonna be hard to offer any advice.

1MP is usable. Depends what you want to use it for.

These days though, I'd not go under 12MP.

While I agree that 10-12MP is my minimum, I would say for the web, and your generic letter sized prints 3MP will do the deed. A 6MP would be twice as good, and more than adequate. Having the OMG, OMG mega mega pixels has always been a marketing thing for the most part for a majority of the public. The only part that the MMPs play is for printing, which most people do not do, and when they do it is not generally very large. Most merely display them on their social sites so all of the extra is going to waste.

So do you think we will see the 40MP line crossed this fall?

Yeh I moved from 36MP to 18MP and never really missed it, apart from the awesome feeling you get when zooming into 100% and seeing the detail, it’s pretty much wasted for most usage.

This yielded some interesting answers.  What I should have asked is what is the oldest digital camera that you still use?  Would be interesting to see answers on that.
