Wedding Photographer and being pregnant

9 years 6 months ago #407521 by RobertMarriottPhotography
Hi,

Hope I've got this in the correct section.

Got a question for any female wedding photographers that are out there.

Me and my wife work together, and are now ready to start trying for a baby.

My question is,

- how do you plan your work around being pregnant/birth date, and if needed, get a backup photographer ?

- or do you do something different to be ready ?

Many thanks

Robert & Claire

Have your contract include something that outlines backup photographer.  Also for the jobs that fall around 1-2 months from your delivery date, be upfront with the client.  Let them make the choice.

:agree:    I just wouldn't book anything around 2 months till due date.  Anything that comes up during that time, pass the work to another photographer.  Some day that photographer might pay you back.

I know photographers that network with others in their area so if an emergency comes up, they have photographers they can call to find someone to cover for them. And then do the same when needed for a fellow photographer.

I'd think about the timeframe and schedule accordingly and then have some backup plans too. Since you two work together if something came up that your wife for example went on bedrest could you manage those weddings yourself? Then I suppose around the due date when neither of you would be available maybe you wouldn't be able to book weddings for that time period (schedule accordingly for your own paternity leave as well as her own maternity leave).

I'd think about looking into assistants who might be available to fill in for her as needed. I don't know what aspects of photographing weddings each of you typically handles but hiring a temporary assistant might be workable even though that might leave you handling more of the workload yourself than usual.

http://asmp.org has Find-a-Photographer listings as well as for finding assistants, you might try that. Or maybe try a local camera club?? not sure if you'd find pros but might make contacts or find someone with enough experience to handle the work and fill in temporarily. Or if anyplace in your area has photography classes or workshops, or a university or community art center, there might be a way to connect with other photographers.

I think this is a smart way of scheduling this.

Good luck and early congrats!  I agree with the advice that has been given so far.  Plan ahead and just keep your schedules flexible around delivery time.
