In not so candid situations, how are you getting natural looking poses from people you are photographing?

You learn to coach people to get them to do what you want.

The part few people understand is that comfort really doesn't come into play. You have to develop a vision for how you want your subject to look, then figure out how to direct them into that pose.

I practice with myself as a subject. It helps me get a better idea of what will and won't work in an image.

Practice. Practice, practice, practice.

Personally, I just keep talking. It doesn't really matter what it's about but the point is it takes the attention away from their being a camera there. The subject is focusing on talking to you. Then I drop in a little guidance to direct them how I need them, which they then do without thinking.

Distraction works.

Just make sure what you're talking about has nothing to do with photography or the camera or whatever. Over time you'll have a handful of stories or things you talk about that you do with every client and it becomes a natural process.
