Assuming you had a camera, lenses and lighting gear.  Any idea how much should be set aside to start a photography business?

A years wages. No new business take's off supporting itself right from the git go. You'll have to build a client base and get your name out there.

http://asmp.org  has info. on determining cost of doing business and other resources for photographers. You could also look at PPA's website. It would probably be a good idea to follow what's happening in the field of professional photography, you could try looking at http://www.pdnonline.com  . It seems like many photographers are finding it challenging to stay in business these days. ASMP has been doing webinars called Business as UnUsual, you don't have to be a member to sign up. You might see if you can find other resources for photographers to find out more about photography as a business.

These days, I'd say a good $2500 to $5000 to get things started

:agree:
Yeah you pretty much need to keep you normal job, and sideline it for a while. In this day and age you only need your equipment, and enough money for gas to get to the jobs. Just look at Craigslist you will see many examples of that. If you have business knowledge, and the desire to make it then you can do well. This goes for anything in life.
