UV filters and astrophotography

6 years 10 months ago #530925 by ShutterPal
Can you help me out with some clarity on this question that a buddy and I can't agree on.  He's recently gotten into astro photography and always uses a UV filter.  I was telling him that he should remove his UV filter as it could likely lower the contrast and even add a haze to the photo.  Night photography, the trick to it is contrast.  So this filter will only cause problems.

Of course he is disagreeing with me.

I don't suppose you can help with this answer?

My opinion, I add NO glass of any kind to my lens when shooting anything at night. Light is precious then and any glass will affect it. Also, the reflections will become more than annoying....

A good read..... photographyblogger.net/using-filters-for-nighttime-photography/

Why so serious?

Thanks for the link, then you and I are in the same boat.  At night, there is nothing that goes in front of my lens.  Especially important when trying to get Milky Way.

The only time I have ever added a filter for astronomy is for getting details with planets. Then those are very light versions of the old yellow, green, blue, and red. Their effect is the same as they are for B&W photography. I used a CP though on the moon a couple of times to cut the brightness down so my eyes would not have to take forever to adapt again to dimmer targets that were rising.
