Using a GoPro HERO6 for bird feeder camera?

5 years 2 months ago #629381 by Pierce Steenken
I want to get some close shots of birds on my bird feeders.  Have any of you tried using a GoPro, somewhere I have a HERO6.  Now I'm thinking I could just plant one next to a feeder, however I'm wondering how I could trigger this thing.  OR would I need to shoot video and just freeze a good frame?

Can that be done with any success?  Take a good frame from a video?

If you consider for a moment what it takes to get a good image of a bird (reasonably fast shutter speed, appropriate aperture and ISO) you'll quickly realize that the entire idea of grabbing a frame from video is, *ahem*, ridiculous.

I shoot video at 1/125s @ 60 fps. Wildilfe requires 1/320s or faster, and an appropriate aperture.

If you want to shoot birds, you need a long lens, adequate body, and patience.

Yep, you are better off going with your DSLR set up with remote or motion controlled trigger.
