Trying to decide between a Drone or Gimbal for next purchase

I just upgraded to a Canon EOS R so I can shoot more video.  That upgrade set me back and my budget is a little sensitive, or in recovering mode!  So, I don't have budget right now for both a drone and gimbal.

If you were going to get one or the other, which would you get right now?  I'm not talking about make and model, just generally speaking a drone or gimbal?

Thank you for your help.

BTW, I'm Brody.

Hey Brody,

Welcome here.  You know if you get a DJI, you can carry around the Mavic and shoot video hand held.  Because technically the camera is supported by a 3 axis gimbal.

Just saying .  ;)

+1

Plus, the drone will give you vantage points that the gimbal wont be able to give you.

Why not just buy a used drone?  The $$ you could save from new to used, I bet will be enough for a gimbal.  Therefor, you are able to get both!

The real question is, what do you need the drone for?  It’s my opinion that a large number of drones are purchased without a good reason, only to later find themselves being sold again or crashed.  A drone worthy of a purchase is going to set you back far more than a decent gimbal head.

I'm looking to use it for different video footage angles and b roll.

Well the plus side to all of this is that prices on drones have been going down.  Especially if you are willing to buy something that is used.

The challenge is with buying a used drone, you REALLY need to inspect the heck out of it.  Many people sell these because they keep crashing them.   So make sure it's in good shape.

I'm looking in Craigslist and finding DJI Mavics with the 'Fly more' option for $650 to $700.  Not a bad price.  That doesn't have the 1" sensor like the second version, but still a great drone with decent camera.

Yeah, but those older drones have small sensors, if you want 1" sensor you need to go with Mavic 2 or Phantom 4 or Inspire, which will cost over a grand easy now.
