10 bit vs 8 bit video

5 years 2 weeks ago #639406 by Ruby Grace
I'm considering getting the Panasonic GH5 or FUJIFILM X-T3  as I've heard it has amazing video.  I was just reading up and found a proper description of what 10 bit video actually means:

"Many cameras will record 8-bit video internally. ... In more technical terms, an 8-bit file works with RGB using 256 levels per channel, while 10-bit jumps up to 1,024 levels per channel. This means a 10-bit image can display up to 1.07 billion colors, while an 8-bit photo can only display 16.7 million."

What I want to know is usually there is a price to pay for certain features performance related.  When speaking about 10 bit video, is there a down side to this?

10 bit will give you more data to do more with.  ALOT more.

I was just reading up on that for the first time, those image sizes are huge when you get to 10 bit!
