Variable ND filter stuck on Break Through 72-82mm step up ring

4 years 6 months ago #663444 by Matt Nguyen
I don't even remember putting this on so tight.  However now my variable ND is stuck to the step up ring.  I just bought a 14-30mm that has 82mm filter size.  But I can't remove it from the step up ring.

How can I move these?

Common when using these cheapo (but light) all rings.

I use a pair of these…

Put it in the freezer for 15 minutes, take a pair of rubber kitchen gloves and with the filter rested on your entire palm of your hand twist open.  That has always worked for me.

I've used both methods, and they both work well. I now carry a pair of filter wrenches in the bottom of my camera bag that I bought through Amazon very reasonably. Just be sure to buy them for the size of your filters as they only work for a small range of sizes.

If its still stuck, find some rubber bands to stretch on the filter for a better grip. I had that work once years ago. The freezer method is also a good idea....

Why so serious?

I can confirm, this method does work.  Very well.  I had tried rubber gloves didn't work.  I had tried tapping on hard surface, that didn't work.  Tossing filter and lens in freezer did work.

I've had this happened last year, and consulted with Google and found the freezer trick, it worked like gold for me.
