You ever have a tripod failure?

I just got an email from a buddy of mine who is n assignment in southern Africa talking about his tripod failed and one leg collapsed and camera and 200-400mm came crashing down  the lens suffered a scratched lens along with the autofocus apparently is making a odd noise and acting "clunky" as he puts it.

I sent email back joking about if he had his leg locks in place. I know this guy, he is super careful with his stuff. I might be wrong but I believe he has a Manfrotto tripod. I also asked him that. Which if I'm right those have the snap locks. Either way that sucks.

Ouch! Knock on wood - no.

Thanks sucks. Nope, never happen to me. I have had the tripod legs get stuck, and wouldn't just simply slid out right away.

Nope - I use really old aluminium Gitzo Reporter tripods - one with a Manfrotto pistol grip.
Heavy as lead, but sturdy as F***...
I just wipe down the inner legs and fittings with WD-40 once a year and they just keep on going.

ouch, maybe his tripod was telling him it's time to buy a new one.

I had mine get blown over in the wind with the camera on it, but that was my fault... I shouldn't have had it out that day. Live and Learn. Hope he's able to get his lens fixed up.

Only cheap ones. But I have had operator error moments where I didnt get the legs locking levers fully engaged.

That's why I still use my old Gitzos...only difference is that mine are alloy legs, not carbon, so a bit heavier (but not much, surprisingly - we were issued the carbon Gitzos and they're only a few grammes lighter)...
I think both of mine are about 30 years old now and as good as when they were new.

Knock on wood, no. 200-400mm is a pricey lens! Hope everything works out!

Only failure was having the pan adjustment break on a relatively cheap brand tripod. My Manfrotto has worked well for twenty years, though my monopod has gotten a leg stuck open a few times

OUCH! I have knocked over my tripod, but it wasn't a failure of equipment. Just me not paying attention. Lucky for me, nothing was on it!

So you think in a true tripod failure, would the tripod manufacture be liable for repair damages? How would you prove something like that?
