Nikon Announces NEW D610 to replace D600

Nikon has announced the release the Nikon D610, the next in its line of D-SLR cameras, nearly a full year after its predecessor the D600 . The upgrades on this new model mainly revolve around the shutter mechanism. This is seemingly meant to address an oil-like leak issue on the sensor that has caused problems for many photographers. The D610 also has an increased frame rate from 5.5fps on the D600 to 6fps and an improved white balance system. The body of the camera also has weather sealing similar to the D800 . Other than these changes, the camera is essentially the same as the D600.

One of the newer features related to the shutter upgrades that Nikon is promoting is the Quiet Continuous Shutter Mode. “Ideal for weddings and other sensitive events, the D610 features a new Quiet Continuous Shutter Mode. When selected via the main command dial, users can shoot discreetly at up to 3 fps.” This feature seems ideal for people like wedding photographers, like the press release states, that can’t really afford to have a noisy shutter at sensitive moments.

Early reviews of the camera are generally positive, though some express skepticism that the oil sensor problem has adequately been addressed. The company hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue and has instead encouraged customers to “return it to a Nikon service center” if “they cannot get their sensor clean using the methods outlined in the user manual.” The lack of a clear and concise statement on the issue has left many dubious if the issue has been resolved with the new model.

With the new release of the D610, the older model D600’s are expected to drop in price, though there is no confirmation on how much we can expect that drop to be.

Key features of the D610 include:
● 24.3MP full frame sensor
● ISO range of 100-6400
● 9 focus point, 9 cross type, 33 point available at f/5.6
● 100% viewfinder coverage
● HD video recording: 1920 x 1080 30p/25p/24p
● 3.2-inch 921K-dot LCD screen
● Dimensions of 141x113x82mm.
● TTL exposure metering 2,016-pixel RGB sensor
● 6fps vs. 5.5fps in the D600
