Sigma always does a good job with their lenses and camera's, I will be keeping an eye on this one.

It's not really a 46 megapixel camera. It's one third of that. They claim 46 because they are recording the 3 colors seperately. That is the way I understand it anyway. You end up with a 15 megapixel image in the end when the colors are combined to make the image. A marketing ploy for sure. I don't care if they record a zillion pixels, if the final image it gives me is 15 megapixels, then it's a 15 megapixel camera to me.

46mp FOVEON sensor. That means it's 3 15-ish mp sensors stacked.

$10000 MSRP = guaranteed failure, IMO. This camera is not competing with other $10K cameras. It's competing with sub-$2K cameras.

Sigma has their own lens mount: SA mount

Yes, the $10K-20K group will most likely buy medium format. You can now get a decent Pentax or Mamiya 645 for under $10K.

Leica going medium format. Sigma putting out $10K cameras. These companies need to remember what made them successful.

The 10K suggested retail price is inflated as are all MSPR's....The Sigma DP2s that I won here on PT had a MSRP of about !K but you could find them for a little over $600 on Amazon...

I have medium format lenses and bodies already, so this is next on my "middle" format list:

www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/hasselb...or_v_cameras/ha13944

Can be fitted to view cameras too.

:)

PS if you are wondering which Leica HP was referring to, it is this one:

www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/leica_s2_p_body_black/lc0001

The price is for the body ONLY. The lenses it takes are almost as expensive (click on Accessories).

PPS chas, I bet that 50mm doesn't seem expensive at all, now. ;)

Maybe it's for shock value? To get people talking.

Looking in the Sigma website store they are priced with lens kits. It looks like the body alone is going to be over $6K. I think that's still way too high. They need to get it under $3K to have a chance, or it's going to need to show up with a fancier feature list than what I've seen so far. Splash proof? I was ticked when Canon sold me a $2500 camera that wasn't weatherproof! ;) It sounds like a $1500 camera with a $4000 sensor. Foveon is neat, but if it was that much better there would be more people using it. I've looked at Foveon camera prints in the past. I'm not seeing the "film-like" qualities. I don't doubt that they're there, but it's subtle. Maybe something that becomes more obvious when using the camera over a period of time. I think it's too subtle for $4000. :) If they had a rep for high end gear they might get away with a little more. I think my Sigma gear (lenses) are wonderful, but their rep is for affordable gear.

You know what camera Sigma kills with? An 8mp, APS-C, bayer array knock off of a Rebel that does video, and sells $150 to $200 less than a Rebel. Leica needs to concentrate on building a digital M that lives up to their rep before they go jousting with Hasselblad.
