Jon, just like the US, Afrika has a bit of everything.
Yes, we have nine deserts which covers a third of the continent. 
The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. 
The Namib desert the oldest in the world.

What is indigenous? How mant tears back?
People see the Himba tribe as indigenous because they dress ancient.
Yet if you google Himba and Herero, they were the same tribe that moved into Namibia. 
The Himbas stayed in the north while another group moved further south. The traditions became vastly different, only the language stayed the same.
There are also Caprivians, Wambo, Kavango, Damara, Bushmen, Basters...
