DSLR for Video?

I have a project in school where I need to record my speech.  Someone suggested to me instead of getting a digital camcorder just use my Canon 60D.  Has anyone tried the video setting on the camera? How well does it work or should i just save myself the trouble and get a camcorder? I need to turn off the sound and I'm not sure if it can be done on the camera (this speech is in sign language).  I have never played with the video recording on my camera so any information would be appreciated.  Thanks!

What video editing software do you have? Turning off the sound is pretty easy, but it depends. Basically you can just turn down the TV when showing it if you want no sound.

Seeing as you're american, you're probably going to shoot at 30fps (this has something to do with the electricity frequency and avoiding flicker more than anything else). Therefore I recommend you shoot using manual and shoot at 60fps. Adjusting aperture and ISO to suit.

SIXTY FRAMES PER SECOND.... trust me on this one.
