print paper question

6 years 8 months ago #539969 by mhattonmd
I have always used on line printing services (nation photo, bay photo) but have recently switched to printing from home for some projects (canon pro 1000)
My question is about photo paper---so many to choose from!
I have read advice of buying sample packs and using trial and error, but my question is, is there a general guide of which type of paper for which type of print? The answer may be- its up to each individual---but if there is some jumping off point Id be grateful for where to start.
ps, sorry if this is in the wrong forum--please feel free to point me in the right direction, and thanks

As far as type of paper goes, I'm really not sure where to direct you other than suggesting that you try a sample box without more insight. Do you know if you'd prefer a matte, luster, or glossy paper? The thing is that there are so many types of paper and it's sort of a matter or trial and error to find out what suits your style best. As far as brands go, I like Moab's paper across the board. I'm also found of Ilford Galerie Pearl for work that I intend on presenting.

If you're working with a Canon, maybe start working with Canon paper. Might be easier for syncing up color profiles if you're just starting out with printing on your own.
