The moat surrounding The Mark Taper Forum

A light dinner by the moat

The new salt containers

Buenos Dias Talkers.  Gary woke up this morning to rain.  After years and years of drought ... the rain is odd.  Five days of rain in the last week.  Rain here has always been a bit odd, unusual ... but with the drought it has become very odd.  Thursday, Mary Lou and Gary watched Linda Vista at the Mark Taper Forum. (DTLA)  It was a extremely well written about a middle aged, former news photog ... sharp and articulate guy ... but who's really screwed up. Funny and sad Gary recommends the play if any of you have the chance to see it.  The play started at 8:00 p.m. We arrived early and camped out on the patio enjoying a light dinner of tamale, empanada and vino.  A bit on the cool side, but comfortable if bundled up.

We all know that Gary enjoys cooking.  Gary's latest cookbook is SALTFATACIDHEAT.  A wonderful book more about cooking in general than recipes. The author, Samin Nosrat, feels that mastering these fundamental elements of cooking would upgrade one's overall cooking expertise.  She also has video series of the same name.  In the video, she sprinkles salt(s) rather than shake or grind the salt.  Gary liked that and consequently, order some salt containers for his salt.

Hey Vincent- The really hard to find stuff Gary gets from Amazon or from ethnic markets.  Out here there is a chain named Sprouts which has an excellent selection of stuff for about the same pricing as Amazon.  Gary likes Amazon because you can get larger quantities than offered in most stores. A large percentage of the herbs Gary grows in the backyard.  Off the top of Gary's head, he has thyme(s), oregano, savory, rosemary, cilantro, parsley, marjoram, lavender, mint(s) and recently Gary has planted some peppercorn plants.

The rain has stopped and Gary popped open the BBQ and grilled up some Carne Asada. (Mary Lou marinaded the meat and Gary cooked it.)

Buenos Dias Talkers.  Man, what a great day!  Maggie, Mary Lou and Gary walked through the park with Max and Max's human Mike.  Mike is from Illinois tossed out appreciation for the perfect day across the entire walk. We returned back to Maggie's house for more dog fun and coffee.  Gary's coffee is soooo good that Mike, a cream and sugar coffee drinker, drinks his Gary Coffee sans sugar.  Hey, if anybody wants some limes, Gary is up to his neck in limes.  The small, yellow Mexican Limes, small but mighty, juicy as hell.

Just a small sampling of Gary's limes.

Buenos Dias Talkers.  It is raining in Biblical quantities today.  Downpours reminding me of Monsoons ('cept it's cold), where Gary can barely see across the street. The rain barrels fill faster than Gary can bail, the koi pond is overflowing, the fish are swimming and playing through the grass.  Friends who live near Temecula wine country (south Corona/Horse Thief Canyon) have a mandatory evacuation as the fire damaged/destroyed hillsides above their community may be slipping downhill.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Gary is working from home today.  Mary Lou is wolfing down these giant chocolate covered strawberries between flipping pancakes, Miss Maggie is eating all the pancakes Mary Lou has flipped and Gary is enjoying some Peruvian coffee.

Gary has a step-granddaughter, Ava, who in middle school.  On Tuesday Mary Lou and Gary attended a play which Ava had a small part.  The play took place in a coffee shop and more much of the play Ava was reading a book and later she was fiddling with her phone.  Mary Lou thought "What the Heck!" ... who is Ava texting in the middle of the play.  Mary Lou texted Ava "Break-a-leg :) " ... Ava looked up slightly startled and smiled at Grandma. Mary Lou learned later that Ava's part called for her to appear to be fiddling with her phone.
