Rick and Mark...Great Job...I love commercial photography and food photography. I am trying to put together a mobile studio that I can take to the Mom and Pop places to be able to shoot on a table in the kitchen as they prepare the food...If you had to pick tools that would fit in a suit case or two what would they be?

Hey Mark, look! A tripod with one leg! That's awesome.

Shammus, there is no one right way or tool. As you can see what Rick is doing, he is adding and subtracting light with little reflectors and flags (they block light).

The light could be a window light. You don't have to buy strobes.

We call this style "table top", and is relaxing to do (if you're into minutiae, like model building). Some white (and black) cardboard is all you really need. A scrim (diffuser) is good to have to soften harsh light, but a sheer curtain on a window will accomplish the same.

Don't spend money on ANYTHING until you know WHY you need it. But do study composition and design.

Matthew :)

PS add a shot of a Robin Myers Imaging gray card (DGC-100) for perfect white balance.
