Why not get an external hard drive,it`s pretty cheap and much bigger and you can save a 16bit tiff!

For reference, I shoot events (usually lasting about 5 hours a time) quite often. I have two 16GB cards in each camera. Usually it's enough, sometimes not.

I shoot about 500-1000 shots depending on how much supplemental video I do.

I do have an external hard drive I store my photos on, after I upload them from my SD card.
But I found out that some of the local "quick" print machines don't recognize .tiff or raw files..
