I think the #1 thing I can tell you is to practice, expect some mistakes, and view those mistakes as opportunities to learn.

#2, pay attention to what your camera tells you. It will tell you when the settings you're using are going to give proper exposure (or at least the same exposure that the camera would choose, if you were using one of the other modes). If you know how to read that, you'll also be able to over- or under-expose when you need to.

To give you a little better direction, I would have to have an idea of your level of understanding on things like shutter speed, aperture and ISO -- and how these affect exposure and depth of field. If you've learned a bit about these factors, I'm sure there are lots of tips we can give you based on the knowledge you already have. If you haven't looked into these areas yet, then the first suggestion would be to learn as much as you can about them!

I have been shooting for over 20 years and understand those things well but DOF has always been my biggest problem cuz I have had a hard time understanding distance between len and subject

RE- DOF depth is 1/3 in front of your subject and 2/3 behind your subject for any given aperture, as long as your subject is in focus then reading the meter and setting your shutter speed and desired aperture should be no problem for you

Remember to engage brain before putting mouth in gear

Here is an Online DoF calculator that might be useful. Someone else originally posted this link elsewhere in the forums, but I don't remember who or in what thread.
