Photography Tip - Panning with a Broom

13 years 3 months ago - 13 years 3 months ago #16340 by Alex
Here is a fun exercise to do when you are itching to play around with your camera and short on ideas. This idea I picked up from Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Shutter Speed".

Here is what I used:

1. Nikon D700
2. 24-70mm f/2.8
3. Bogen Magic Arm
4. Super clamp
5. Broom
6. Took one of the dogs red toy ball
7. MC-36 Remote

Ok... so what I did was secured the Magic Arm to the broom's handle with a Super Clamp, with the camera secure (for safe measures I had the camera's strap secured with additional clamp) I moved the camera into manual focus (For this shot I was at 28mm) and aperture priority mode. I was after 1/25 second shutter speed (to get the blurred effect) so dropped my ISO to 160 and aperture to f/13 for correct exposure. I also set my shutter's release mode on "CH" for Continuous High Speed.

Holding the broom with right hand and shutter remote and camera with left, I started swinging the broom as if I was sweeping. I found that you want to skim over the ground, this keeps vibration to a minimum and the brooms clarity remains crisp. I put the red ball in the path to give some color and some perception of something actually being swept with the broom. Truth is, the broom never hit the ball, the ball remained still.

Here are a couple shots of the set up:

Different angle of the set up:

And here is the finished shot:

I like this, but would have liked to seen a old school boom used instead. You know with the actual straw? ;)

I'm wondering if this would work with a vacuum sweeper? I might then try a wetvac but I'd better go with the waterproof camera just in case...

Very creative rig.
