When to use vibration reduction and when not to?

Other than when using a tripod, when else should vibration reduction be turned off? The reason I ask is when I'm super still I can feel something making a shift in the lens when taking a photo. Is this normal?

When its on a tripod you need to have it off

I understand when it's on a tripod, just wondering when I have the camera super still. I can feel the lens making a clicking noise and movement, then I shut off the VR and it's fine.

The movement or image shift you are experiencing is normal, it is the lens reacting to any slight shift in the camera or subject while the reduction mode is on. Turn your reduction on and leave it on, unless you are set on a tripod, then turn it off, also, it is a good idea to turn it off if you are putting the camera away, if you forget and leave it on, and leave the camera on, the vr will run continuously and can burn out a servo.

You also want to turn it off in a panning situation. Like when your trying to capture a moving subject. The VR can actually add blur to the subject as your moving.
