How to avoid Washed out Nature Photos?

12 years 1 week ago #223631 by jennlovato77
I am getting ready to take a trip to the Grand Canyon and was looking for some pointers. Most of my pictures of sunny day nature scenes always look washed out. The sky is almost white. Anyone have any tips on how to avoid this or compensate for it? Im using a Canon EOS Rebal T3.

Lower your ISO, or increase shutter speed, or smaller aperature... depending on what you want for depth of field...

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

Don't go without buying a Circular Polarizing filter (CPL). Also, find a lens hood that will screw into the polarizer if you can. This is a setup that I just don't leave home without.

When shooting with a circular polarizing filter you simply rotate the polarizer until the sky looks the darkest and then compose your shot. The polarizing effect is always best in the first three hours of daylight and the last three hours of daylight with the camera in a place where the sun is at 90 degrees camera right or 90 degrees camera left.

It is what it is.

If the sky is overcast, that will be tough to work around. Post a photo, and the EXIF data for it, then we can give specific help. Here are links to articles on metering and exposure -

The best way to avoid washed out colors is to shoot at a better time of day. Don't be lazy and get out there early to catch the best light and go again in the evening. Use the mid-day to scout out images. Black and white works better than color at mid-day, so consider that option as well. Shooting in mid-day can work, it's just harder to get that "wow" shot. The Grand Canyon is known for hazy conditions and it's tough to get nice clear shots sometimes. Have a great trip!
