How I Got the Shot: Featuring Gerry Martins

"To get this image I set up an Elinchrom Octa Softbox on an Elinchrom Dlite 2 monolight as a key light to the right of the camera. An Elinchrom A head with a Ranger Quadra battery pack was used as a rim light from the back right. The image was captured on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera with a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lens set at 1/60 sec - f/8.0 at a focal length of 85mm - ISO 100.

Among all the images we photographed for the calendar, this one was particularly challenging. Supermodel Freddy Daruwala was on a tight schedule. As we were doing some of the other images for the calendar as well on the same day, we utilized the make-up and wardrobe time to prep the shot and get the lighting right. We had to decide the look of the image on the spot based on the wardrobe the stylist was going to use on the model. I wanted to give this image a 'Dick Tracy-esque' feel and enhance the mood with the lighting.

Initially the client (World For All) wanted to photograph this particular scene with a dog. However, the animal did not co-operate. We then decided to try it with two kittens. These kittens, being stray, were not used to being close to humans and kept jumping off the table and hiding among the equipment at the location of the shoot, setting us off on a game of 'hide and go seek' every few seconds.

Eventually, however we got an absolutely iconic image." —Gerry

Nice job on the photo Gerry. The rim light I think I would have moved it just a tad more to the left. Either way

Cat's are tough to photograph. They always seem to have a mind of their own and move around. I do agree, that the rim light is a bit strong, but good job here Gerry.

There must be something wrong with me. I find this image uninteresting on every level. I would never call it "iconic".
