How I Got the Shot: Featuring Kurtis Lamberton

10 years 5 months ago #305179 by PhotographyTalk

"I constructed this image using a three light setup. I only had access to one Profoto Acute B2 battery pack and flash head, and because I wanted to light all three of my subjects individually I knew I had to composite three images together. The main exposure was done of the sniper in the front left part of the frame. I used a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-105 f/4 lens supported by a Giottos carbon fiber tripod and ball-head. My settings was a focal length of 24mm with an aperture of f/8 @ 1/200th of a second at 200 ISO. It was about 7:00 pm on a summer night so I had a nice natural rim light to help seperate each subject from the background. After I got the frame I wanted of the sniper, I made sure my camera didn't move on the tripod when I changed the position of my softbox to light the rifleman on the right. I didn't have an assistant so all my exposures were done with a wireless remote that I triggered while holding the softbox to light each soldier. The funniest part of the whole shoot was that the smoke bomb we used lasted for more than two minutes and I was convinced we were going to set the dry wheat field on fire. Not to mention that the location was literally 30 feet from a major road, so with billowing smoke and three men in camoflage holding large rifles, its no wonder that we got some strange looks from the people passing by." —Kurtis

My brother is in the Army and he has brought home smoke bombs and they do burn hot and seem to last a long time. This is a good tip, what gear are you using specifically?
