How I Got the Shot: Featuring Sienna Clough
"For this particular photo I wanted to try a method DT (David Turner) and Greg Heisler taught on one of our location lectures. I knew exactly the model I wanted but getting her in a studio in the small amount of time we had was nearly impossible. I knew I wanted a model with stunning eyes, and that I wanted the shot to be all about those eyes. So, I brought 9-year old Katherine under a small bridge to get the frontal, soft light with darkness around her with the exception of her face. I wanted the shot to be simple, yet impactful.
I had Katherine kneel just inside, underneath the ledge of the bridge, just enough to get the kind of light I was looking for. I had a black card to her right, and a touch of light from a soft box to the left of her. I had her wear a black scarf around her neck to help draw the focus even more to her eyes. I used a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens at a 1/60th sec at f/3.2 at a focal length of 70mm with ISO 100.
With the cold being a big factor that day, we were only there for about fifteen minutes, getting about thirty shots. But, the combination of a beautiful and willing young model, some great light, and a little burning and dodging in post, I was able to get the shot I was looking for that day, and had a little adventure doing it!” —Sienna
