Include people to your scene. It adds a sense of scale to landscapes, buildings, and landmarks that you wouldn't have otherwise.

Sometimes the color can be a distraction from what the shot could be, try black and white. It can bring the emotions into perfect focus.

Have patience and visit a location frequently in order to capture the right shot at the right time. It took 3 months of visiting this site 2-3 times per week to get this shot

also had to wait a couple of months visiting the zoo every other week to get this shot and had to be patient the day that I got it

After the sun goes down, dont go away when the rest of the photographers leave.. stay. The show is not over. Some of the best light happens 30 to 45 min's after the sun goes down... same w/sunrise = 45 - 30 min before the sun crests the horizon.

For this one, I was up on a rocky portion of Miners Beach on Michigan's Lake Superior shoreline. There were a good 25 photographers there all set up.. W/in minutes of the sun dropping below the horizon, every one of them all packed up and left. I was the only one left and I hung around till all the light was gone and got this one about 40 min's "after" the sun set below the water line.

If your subject has brush, sticks, or any other unwanted debris in the way of getting a good focus, try switching over to manual focus to avoid a focus error.

Don't throw away anything. The worst disasters offer some of the best challenges.
